Gold is priced in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier than the ounces on a kitchen scale. Mixing the two up is the most common and most expensive weighing mistake there is.
Type a weight into any box below and the rest update as you go.
Weight only. What that weight is worth also depends on purity and grade.

These are defined values, not roundings, so you can check any figure above by hand:
A troy ounce is about 10% heavier than the ounce on your kitchen scale. Read one as the other and you will think you have 10% more gold than you do.
This is worth being careful about at the point of sale. If you weigh a lot on a kitchen scale set to ounces and quote that number, every figure downstream is wrong, and the disagreement only surfaces once the gold is already in someone else’s hands.

Divide grams by 31.1034768. Gold has always been priced in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier than the ounces on a kitchen scale, so using the wrong ounce overstates your gold by roughly 10% and leads to a very disappointing offer.
One twentieth of a troy ounce, or 1.55517384 grams. It is abbreviated dwt and still turns up in the jewelry trade and on older assay paperwork, which is why it is worth being able to convert quickly.
They are simply different systems. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g; the everyday avoirdupois ounce used for groceries is 28.349523125 g. Precious metals use troy, and a kitchen scale reading in ounces is not measuring the same unit your buyer is.
About 15.43. Grains are the smallest of the traditional weights and mostly appear when describing very small nuggets or in older records. One troy ounce is exactly 480 grains.
It converts weight only. Weight is what your scale measures; purity is what testing establishes. To turn weight into money you need both, which is what the payout calculator does.
